The Mystic Effect

Dear Readers.

For the past two and a half months I’ve been working feverishly on my new baby. My First Event. My First Show. Beautifully titled The Mystic Effect. Its a show skillfully fused with music, poetry, dance, fashion and film. I can’t lie, its a lot of hard work, sleepless nights and caffeine filled days but its all been worth it. The story behind this whole concept is beyond mystifying, and its something that I know, I must do.

Whenever I’m asked, “Why are you putting on THIS show?” I’m so reluctant to say, “Why not!”….and why not indeed. As an artist I’ve taught myself to think outside, around, over, underneath and beyond the BOX. I live and breathe ART, and combining these elements into one production, is just one way of bringing my vivid imagination to life and conquering my fear…..that fear of  ‘Shoulda-Coulda-Woulda.’

Why is my show called ‘The Mystic Effect?’ Well the word Mystic derives from Mysticism which can be explained as being, beyond normal human perception. Its that unseen beauty and excitement that you feel, yet cannot see with naked eye. Its a world of wonder, and a world that exists within all of us. Personally, I’m the kind of gal that believes in fairy-tales, mermaids, pixies, aliens and astrology. Yes I’m known to be a tad weird, and believe you me,  I love every bit of my weirdness. (my faithful readers know this)

When I was finalizing the concept of my show, I shared the idea with a few people, who suggested I use ‘So-and-So’ to help boost my brand, so to speak (no pun intended). Yes, ‘So-and-So’ is wonderful, and yes ‘So-and-So’ has build a name for him/herself. Good for ‘So-and-So’! Good for them! I applaud them! BUT. What about ‘Joe Blowe’ who lives around the corner, or ‘Suzie Q’ who lives up the hill, and ‘Tommy Banana’ who lives under the rock?….Who are IMMENSELY TALENTED, DRIVEN BEYOND BELIEF people who are more than capable to do as good of a job as ‘So-and-So.’ You know them. The Under Dog. The people that hardly get a break because no-one knows who they are, because they haven’t made a name for themselves yet. Well, I was an Underdog, in fact in some ways I still consider myself an Underdog…..and…..more than a ‘name’, more than a ‘brand’, I believe in someone’s passion and ambition and with my first project I’ll be bringing out a few of those Underdogs.

Can I tell you how EXCITED I am?? Nervously excited. Nonetheless, this project is all unfolding and coming together beautifully because every step is made with God.

This morning my friend Yanique randomly sent me this message on bbm. About half-way into the message the tears began to flow…I’ve been there! Not just having a bad day, but having a ‘bad month’, a ‘bad year’ and wondering “Why in the world God would let me go through such pain?” This message shed a new light unto everything I already knew. I hope it does for you too.

God can I ask you a question?
God: Sure…
Me: Promise you won’t get mad!
God: I promise
Me: Why did you let so much stuff happen to me today?
God: What do you mean?
Me: Well, I woke up late,
God: Yes,
Me: My car took forever to start,
God: Okay,
Me: At lunch they made my sandwich wrong & I had to wait,
God: Hmmmm…
Me: On the way home, my phone went DEAD, just as I picked up a call…..
God: All right,
Me: And on top of it all off, when I got home I just wanted to soak my feet in my new foot massager & relax. BUT it wouldn’t work!!! Nothing went right today! Why did you do that?
God: Let me see, the Death Angel was at your bed this morning & I had to send one of the other angels to battle him for your life. I let you sleep through that,
Me (humbled): OH
GOD: I didn’t let your car start because there was a drunk driver on your route that would have hit you if you were on the road,
Me (ashamed)………
God: The first person who made your sandwich today was sick & I didn’t want you to catch what they have, I knew you couldn’t afford to miss work,
Me (embarrasses): Ok,
God: Your phone went dead bcuz the person that was calling was going to give false witness about what you said on that call, I didn’t even let you talk to them so you would be covered.
Me (softly): I see God,
God: Oh yea and that foot massager, it had a shortage that was going to throw
out all of the power in your house tonight. I didn’t think you wanted to be in the dark.
Me: I’m sorry God
God: Don’t be sorry, just learn to TRUST.

2012-The Year of the Dragon

The year of the Black Water Dragon will offer all members of the zodiac some amazing opportunities. Expect the unexpected during this unusual year, when mystery abounds and change happens almost constantly.  The dragon is worshiped and loved for his strength, power and justice, and offers the most harmony for those who are in step with the law and with what is fair and right. Good deeds will be rewarded, and dishonesty will be punished. The dragon can represent the good and bad in each person, and reminds us of the constant goal to be good and pure, and to do the right thing.

*RAT*

This will be a very successful year for the Rat, who will be happy, centered, and carefree. By remaining positive and assertive, the Rat will be able to adapt easily to the changes that will come rapid-fire throughout 2012. You are always good at dealing with the unexpected, so you can expect to do better than many other signs.

Rats can make great headway this year in their careers, and with starting a new business of your own. Success will be enhanced for those Rats who are engaged in an artistic or creative career, and for those who work in a cultural venue. Rat people have a tendency to work behind the scenes vigorously, but this year it would be wise to be very aboveboard and open in your attempts to get ahead, because honesty and clarity will be on everyone’s mind. If problems at work are encountered, you must address them immediately.

Rats should be committed to steering clear of any opportunities that seem shady or too good to be true. The very beginning of the year will require great industriousness and fast thinking. Spring will also be intense, but the path ahead will be clearer. Throughout summer and fall, the Rat can relax more but must still remain tuned-in to any potential changes on the business and home fronts. There may be small obstacles, but nothing that you can’t handle.

Although the Rat can accomplish quite a lot in business during 2012, this sign’s personal life could suffer if care isn’t taken to nurture it, so Rat people will need to make a point of staying in tune with personal relationships. During the second half of the year, the Rat who is interested in finding love could meet someone special, but will have to commit to the time and energy and special care that a love relationship requires. Overall, this will be a very good year for the hard-working Rat.

*OX*

For the Ox, 2012 may start with a whimper but it can end with a bang if the hard-working Ox remains positive and dedicated. There may be some stress and anxiety at the start of the year, but there will also be many fabulous opportunities. If you face any intimidating challenges with a determined attitude, then barriers will fall and anything will be possible. This year your goals should move beyond just the pursuit of riches and a luxurious lifestyle – you should also work on creating goals, perfecting work efficiency, and building a plan for future success. This should begin early on in the year for that’s the very best time for starting new projects that will lead to great accomplishments.

If there are skills or there is knowledge that you  need to acquire, then education will be very important in the beginning of the year. January and February of 2012 will be well-suited for starting educational pursuits and for exploring personal talents. This period will also be good for networking and making new business connections, or for changing jobs or fields if desired. You can also make some excellent connections at this time with people who can open doors to great achievements.

Since the Water Dragon is very influential when it comes to charity, the Ox would be wise to reach out to the needy and disenfranchised and help whenever it’s possible. This will not only improve your karma, it will give you a great sense of personal fulfillment.

The Ox should aim to be fully in control of business affairs by spring, and should maintain great control over financial, legal, and other important matters. While you are quite independent, you must learn to delegate less important matters and to encourage a team mentality among co-workers or subordinates. By summer, things might slow down for you. And even though you may begin to feel a bit discouraged with a slower pace and less progress, you must maintain an aura of control and positive energy in order to survive and ultimately thrive. Romantically speaking, 2012 could be a successful year for the Ox. For those seeking love, it might be found through a business connection. Even though this year will be very business-focused, you must remember to set time aside for fostering personal bonds too. *TIGER*

Tiger, tiger, burning bright, you will definitely be in your element in 2012. The Tiger is very intense and intuitive, and a Water Dragon year is very favorable and auspicious for your sign. You must take great care not to indulge in moodiness or give in to temperamental behavior, or these could lead to insomnia and depression, which could affect your work or personal life.In 2012, finances will remain fairly steady for the Ram. Although there probably won’t be any overwhelming profits, there also won’t be any major financial problems. If you are careful and wise with every penny, you may come out slightly ahead.This year will come in very easily for the Ram, so you will be feeling rather carefree. Care must be taken, though, to address any issues or errors that occur so that they don’t become overwhelming.The Ram must also be careful not to harbor a superior attitude, or you may find conflict with co-workers or family members. Treating others with disrespect could result in numerous problems. For those Ram people who do need an attitude adjustment, spring will be the perfect time for reflection. This is when you can assess your own behavior and make corrections. By trying hard to be part of “the team” you can make amends for any bad behavior. In fact, this year will hand you all the success you can deal with. The Rabbit will shine brightly in the spotlight this year. If you having HAIR problems I feel bad for you girl. I have 99 problems and my HAIR…Is. All. Of. Them! ALL OF THEM!!

Ironically enough, my very first post when I created my blog was on hair. Now this being my last post for the year, will be on…yup! You guessed it! HAIR! Not just any hair. My hair.

For my birthday this year, we went to go to Mexico. ‘We’ as in my boyfriend and I. Lovely, lovely place. It was truly magnificent. We climbed the highest temple/pyramid in Coba, ate delicious food, drank lots of tequila and caesars (surprisingly I didn’t get wasted), partied and swam. Which is the core point of this blog post. Swimming. I can’t swim at all, and the thought of lots of water scare the be-jabbers outta me! Seriously! When I was little girl, I used to have repeated nightmares of me drowning in a flood. As I got older, I chalked those nightmares up as my past life demise. I believe truly believe I drowned in my past life. PLUS! I’m a LEO, which is a FIRE sign and fire and water don’t mix. In fact, whenever I’m around water, I get nervously anxious. Ugh. I should add that ironically, my boyfriend is a Water sign, a Scorpio to be exact who loves to be around water. But that is another story.

So back to ‘swimming’ and why it is the core depth (pun intended) of this story. In Mexico I couldn’t let my bf teach me how to swim, for the simple fact that it’ll mess up my HAIR. Although my weave could withstand the aftershock of salt water and chlorine water, I just didn’t have the time to sit, blow dry, flat iron and curl that HAIR back up! I mean I’m on vacay! Who wants to spend four hours fixing their damn HAIR?! So, I had to swim….lets be real…I had to WADE with my head above water at all times. I never really realized how much of a piss-off my two and a half pack of  18 inches ‘Deep Wave Remy’ was, till I was on the plane back home to Toronto. This hair was annoying the crap outta me!

As soon as I got home, which was at 3am, I went straight to the bathroom, got my scissors and preceded to take this ish out! Mind you, I just got my hair done a week ago. But I did not care! I just wanted all of this hair gone! After I took it out, I stared at my naturally, shoulder length hair and thought, “I want it all OFF”. I told the bf I was gonna cut it all off and if he thinks I will still look ‘hot?’ He said, “It doesn’t matter what I say, you’re gonna do whatever you want anyways.” He was right!

I pondered cutting my HAIR for about two weeks. I asked a few ladies with short hair how they felt, and if having short hair still made them feel sexy. I checked numerous editions of Black Hair magazine trying to find the style I like, and eventually I chose the ‘Rhianna Mini Mohawk’ style. I liked everything about it. Plus, cutting my hair will save me alot of money. I was so sick and tired of throwing my money away on weave! So I took the plunge! On September 2, 2011 I CUT MY HAIR!

I wasn’t scared doing it, I was just anxious to see the results. So I searched for the best hairstylist in town to do the honors. When it was all done and styled and I was $150 (including tip) poorer, I walked out of there with a semi new found confidence. I called my boyfriend to tell him the news, (he said he couldn’t wait to see it) and my friend Yanique (who has short hair) to share the news as well. I purposely took the bus that day, just to see if I would receive any compliments (typical Leo). Ten minutes into the bus ride, no one said anything, so I asked some random dude if he liked my hair and if I looked good. He said, I looked like a “Super Model!”  Boom! There it was. But hold on, why did I have to ask? I never have to ask. As soon as I got home, I went straight to the bathroom, stared at myself in the mirror and started to panic! I screamed, “Oh My God I’m BALD and UGLY!” What the hell was I thinking?!!

I forced myself to calm down with some food…hey!…some people calm down with alcohol, me?…I do it with food and sleep. I knew my bf was gonna be home soon and the last thing I want is for him to not find me attractive or better yet, see that I’m distraught. So I prettied up myself (to best of my ability with my BALD ASS HEAD), forced some fake confidence on and greeted him at the door. He was surprised to say nonetheless, when I asked, “How do you like it?” He replied, “Do YOU like it?”…and he left it at that. I knew he hated it. And I did too. But my pride refused to let him know that. We didn’t talk much that night and when he went to bed, I was up all night ranting about how much I hated what that hair-stylist had done to me! Did she not have a heart?!  What a stupid bitch! Ugh I cant believe I spent so much when I could have easily gone to Eglinton West and got it done for $60!! Blah, Blah, Blah! I went on for hours! *breathe*I had a wedding to attend to the next day and I couldn’t go looking BALD and freakin’ UGLY?! So bright and early the next day, I went to the Beauty Supply store (aka the weave store) by Keele and Sheppard and bought a wig!

A week later, I bought two more wigs. They lasted for about a month….just enough time for my hair to go long enough, to braid, so I can sew on some weave.

In the two hours it took me to write and edit this blog post, I became exhausted. Not because writing is tedious, but because its been an everlasting fight with my HAIR and frankly, I’m getting tired of it! Do you know how much money I wasted since September?!!  Quite IRONIC since the main purpose of me cutting my hair was to SAVE!!  geez louise.

My interview with Reggae Superstar Mavado.

A week ago, well November 16, 2011 to be exact, I had the opportunity to interview the ‘Gully God’ himself, Mavado. You can tell by the interview that I was a bit nervous. (I hadn’t done an interview in over a year) Nonetheless the interview left me feeling super inspired.
